We are proud and pleased to announce the PhD defence of Rosine Tchatchoua Djomo of the Sociology of Development and Change Group, who will present her dissertation titled “Governing Land in Post-War Settings: Land Conflicts, Land Reforms, Legal Pluralism, and State Formation in Burundi.”
📅 Date: Monday, October 21, 2024
🕒 Time: 3:30 PM
📍 Venue: Omnia Auditorium
Thesis Summary
In post-conflict societies, governments often implement land governance reforms to address past land dispossession and resolve ongoing land disputes. These interventions are seen as key to promoting sustainable peace and rebuilding governance institutions. However, their effectiveness in practice remains unclear.
Rosine’s research examines the relationship between land governance reforms, legal pluralism, and state formation in Burundi. Specifically, her dissertation explores how land dispute resolution, restitution processes, and the formalization of localized land rights influence governance structures and power dynamics. By focusing on these intersections, Rosine provides critical insights into the role of land governance in shaping authority, legitimacy, and state-building in post-war contexts.
