We are proud to share that Tom Rowe of the Cultural Geography Group will be defending his PhD thesis titled “𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲? 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀” on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 1:00 PM in the Omnia Auditorium, Wageningen.

Tom’s research explores how privileged groups in the Netherlands cultivate hope through collective political action. Through case studies of Extinction Rebellion Netherlands, The Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes, and Scientists 4 Future Wageningen, his work sheds light on the role of activism, art, and academia in shaping alternative futures.

By bridging insights from climate activism, climate justice, and prefigurative politics, this thesis contributes to understanding how movements create tangible pathways for systemic change.
