Seminar Series ‘Theorizing Post-Capitalism’ | Part 1, with Julia Spanier

RSO@CSPS and the Foodscapes Cluster invite you to a seminar by Julia Spanier: ‘Surviving within capitalism: “peri-capitalist” agri-food initiatives in Germany and the Netherlands’.

In this seminar, Julia Spanier presents her research on agri-food initiatives as agents and spaces of post-capitalist transformation in Germany and the Netherlands. Focusing particularly on community-supported agriculture (CSA), the talk explores both the anti-capitalist potential and the internal tensions of ‘peri-capitalist’ initiatives operating within a capitalist food economy and growth-based society.

The seminar highlights how CSA initiatives can facilitate the unlearning of capitalist values, create post-capitalist spaces in rural contexts, and prefigure more just and ecologically sound relations between consumers and producers. At the same time, it reflects on structural barriers such as limited accessibility and precarious working conditions that continue to shape alternative food networks.

Drawing on degrowth perspectives and Julia’s own experiences with engaged, action-oriented research, the talk also reflects on the importance of transdisciplinary collaboration with agri-food communities, social movements, activists, producers, and consumers.
