Upcoming PhD Defences at the Centre of Space, Place and Society

Celebration CSPS

It’s always a pleasure to celebrate the hard work and dedication of researchers who are about to reach a significant milestone – their PhD defence. At the Centre of Space, Place and Society, we’re proud to announce three upcoming PhD defences that promise to bring new insights and knowledge to the forefront.

1. “The Promised Transformation: Mexican Coffee Policies During the Administration of President López Obrador” by Claudia Oviedo Rodriguez (RSO)

Date and Time: August 30th, 2023, 13:30 – 15:00
Location: Auditorium, Omnia building, Wageningen University

In her dissertation, Claudia delves into the intricate world of Mexican coffee policies during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s tenure. Drawing on state theories, agrarian political economy, and global value chain studies, Claudia’s research presents a case study centered on the Soconusco region of Chiapas. Her analysis spans multiple chapters, addressing topics ranging from the evolution of coffee policies in Mexico to the incorporation of different types of farmers into various coffee markets. Claudia’s work sheds light on the complex relationships among the state, small farmers, farmer organizations, and the coffee processing industry, providing invaluable insights into the promised transformation brought about by the Mexican state. 2. “Seaward and Landward” by Francisca López Regalado (SDC)

Date and Time: September 1st, 2023, 11:00 – 12:30
Location: Auditorium, Omnia building, Wageningen University

Francisca López Regalado’s dissertation, “Seaward and Landward,” takes us on a journey to the coast of San Blas (Nayarit) Mexico, where she explores the emergence of publics in the midst of coastal disputes. Investigating three distinct conflicts, Francisca’s work is rooted in relational approaches such as assemblage theory, actor-network theory, and Political Ontology. By reimagining conventional notions that define publics and politics solely within the domain of the State, Francisca offers a fresh perspective on these critical issues. Join us to gain deeper insights into the dynamics of these conflicts and the evolving role of public engagement in coastal regions. More info and livestream.

3. “Flourish and Nourish: Development and Evaluation of a Salutogenic Healthy Eating Programme for People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” by Kristel Polhuis (HSO)

Date and Time: September 20th, 2023, 16:00 – 17:30
Location: Auditorium, Omnia building, Wageningen University

Kristel Polhuis presents her interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation, “Flourish and Nourish,” where the realms of nutritional and social sciences converge. Focusing on optimizing Dutch dietary care for individuals with type 2 diabetes, Kristel’s research is guided by the salutogenic health model. By prioritizing factors that contribute to well-being, rather than simply addressing the causes of disease, Kristel’s approach offers a holistic and supportive framework for healthy eating. Through the development and evaluation of the dietary intervention programme ‘SALUD,’ Kristel uncovers the potential of a salutogenic approach in improving eating habits. More info and livestream.

These upcoming dissertations promise to enrich our understanding of diverse fields, from coffee policies to coastal conflicts and health interventions. Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these diligent researchers as they contribute invaluable insights to their respective domains. You are very welcome to join the ceremonies live at Wageningen Campus or online via live stream.
